How can I begin my search for a job in the Student Union?

First of all, getting a job at the Student Union gives you some extra money and the flexibility every student needs!  The Union offers many positions that accommodate every individual’s interests and schedule.  To jump-start your search you can log on the Student Union website, www.union.arizona.edu.  If you navigate the union website you will see on your left hand column “Get a Job.”  Clicking on this link will allow you to download an application form, which can also be found in the info desk located in the second floor of the student union.  You can also link onto Career Services’ Wildcat Job Link through the Student Union website.  Another way to find out who is hiring in the Student Union is by asking!  Usually there are signs outside or around the cashier announcing job openings!  Good luck with your job search!

Can I buy gift cards for the Student Union? If so, where?

It’s the end of the year and it’s about that time for finals!  Some of us are going to be living in the library for the next week, and some of us will be graduating!  Now that the year is almost over, many of your are probably running low on cash or simply hunger stricken by finals.  Besides cramming for exams, perhaps you should start thinking about how to thanks all those professors and friends who helped you throughout the semester!  Good idea, right?  But, what are you going to give that friend in class or that helpful professor?  Well, that “thank you” can easily be said with a Student Union gift card! If you are like most students, you probably didn’t know the Student Union had gift cards! They are easy ways to say thank you or for what whatever.  You can purchase a gift card in the meal plan office with cash, debit or credit card! So come by the meal plan office, located in the second floor of the Student Union, across from the Cat Card office and get your gift cards!

I would like to get a job at the unions and I was wondering if having my hair dyed pink or another unusual color would hinder my prospects?

Wanting to work at the student unions is a smart idea. Working at the unions gives you the flexibility you need and want from any job. At the unions you are sure to find a position that best fits your abilities while working along side other students like you! Right now is the ideal time to apply for jobs at the student unions because it is the beginning of the semester and there are positions available in various departments. Having unusual hair dye in your hair is not an issue when applying for a job at the student unions. However, there are restrictions on tattoos, piercings, and facial jewelry. You should consult your future employer if you still have questions or doubts. For more information on applying for jobs at the student unions log onto www.union.arizona.edu click on Leadership & Involvement and select Get a Job! Good luck!

Do the Student Unions offer any stress management classes?

The semester is coming to a quick end, and while most of us are recovering from midterms, others are beginning to stress about finals. School in general creates both a mental and physical challenge for most students, but there is a solution to this sleep-depriving problem. The Student Unions’ Center for Student Involvement & Leadership offers leadership workshops, some of which focus on stress management. Check out the CSIL workshops at  www.union.arizona.edu/csil and click on “leadership opportunities.” Campus Health also offers great programs to help deal with stress; call them at 621-3334. Being stressed out the remainder of the semester is not a good idea, especially when finals come creeping around!

What is it I hear about a new eatery?

Fresh, vibrant, organic and premium are just a few words describing the new restaurant coming to the Student Union! Many of you were probably asked to give your opinions for the design of the new restaurant, which means student input is extremely important. The new restaurant will be a great break from the beige fried food offered throughout the rest of the Union!  Rich leafy lettuce will be the main ingredient, along with other crisp greens and tasty dressings! This new restaurant will be ideal for the healthy eater, since there will be an array of organic ingredients! So remember, next semester when you are contemplating what to dig your teeth into, there will be a new fresh  place to check out!

Where is REPLAY going?

As many of you noticed there was a “moving sale” sign on display at Replay. As of Monday (the first day after Spring Break) Replay’s new location is next to C.A.T.S (Computing And Technology Store), in the ground floor of the UA BookStore. If you walk through the Union, where Replay used to be, notice that in it’s place is a vacant hollow room. So, what will take its place? Perhaps another study room? Or a new fabulous place to eat? Tune in next week to find out what will take over Replay’s old home. But remember, Replay will still be around, but now it will be located downstairs in the UA BookStore, make sure to pick up new CDs and movies once Replay is up and running again!

What are you doing on Tuesday nights?

Well, you can either stay at home and watch the overplayed episodes of the Real World, which you probably already memorized, OR you can come out and join the Arizona Swing Cats! Swing Cats meet every Tuesday night in the Gittings dance building from 7 to 10pm, and practice fun and challenging swing dance moves from the 1940s. They enjoy a variety of dance moves from East Coast Swing to West Coast Swing and everything in the middle. Every Tuesday there is a crowd of graduate students and undergrads stepping to the catchy beats of the 1940s! So remember, if you are tired of going to the club and doing the usual “Bump n’ Grind” moves or simply want to experience something new in a friendly environment, come out and join the Arizona Swing Cats! If you have any further questions, feel free to email Sarah here.

Why is Cactus Grill closed on the weekends?

During the week Cactus Grill is one of the busiest places. As you may already know, Cactus Grill offers a variety of healthy alternatives to the greasy food students tend to eat! True, Cactus Grill is swarming with students Monday thru Friday, but the weekend is another atmosphere.  For the past couple of semesters The Grill experienced a decline in student purchases, forcing it to close during the weekends since it was not cost effective. Although the Grill is closed weekends, healthy alternatives are still located in the Student Unions! If you are looking for a healthy smoothie, tasty sandwich or wrap check out IQ Fresh from 10am to 6pm or On Deck Deli from 11am to 8pm.  If you are headed to the Park Student Union you should try Bruegger’s, open 9am to 5pm and remember that U-Mart is open 8am to 11pm on the weekend. Even though you might miss out on the Grill’s steamy soup or fresh salad bar, there are still plenty of other options available at your Student Unions!

What's going on in the Hispanic community?

Here is an exciting new opportunity I recommend you check out!  NAHJ is fresh to the UA campus and ready to get Hispanic Journalists and anyone interested in Journalism excited about reporting! NAHJ addresses and reports on issues concerning the Hispanic community and helps its members network among local broadcasting stations–presenting its members with internship opportunities. So what else does NAHJ do? It brings Hispanic journalists together to address events affecting Hispanics and promotes diversity in newsrooms across the country. Meetings for NAHJ are every other Thursday at 6pm. This is a great way to get involved, meet some truly driven students, and practice those people skills!
