Overview of ATLAS

Whether you’re a freshman just starting out, a senior with a lot on your plate, or a faculty/staff member hoping for professional development, ATLAS has a program to help you reach your leadership goals. No matter whether you are looking to enrich your leadership experience with diverse subjects, or whether you have a specific area you want to improve, ATLAS has the appropriate track for you. With three levels of certificates available that can be completed over the course of a year or in one day, this really is leadership on your schedule! You can start at any point in your college career or semester, and a team of ATLAS mentors will help you find the program that’s right for you.

Come learn about your own behavior patterns as they relate to physical wellness and develop strategies and learn resources for enhancing your health. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Leadership and Wellness, Leadership and Life Skills, and Leadership Enrichment certificates. Wed Sep 10, 5-6pm    Understanding the Community SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Before we can serve the community, we need to understand it. This workshop will focus on ways to better understand the concept of community, the communities we work with and what they need. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Service Leadership and Leadership Enrichment certificates. Thu Sep 11, 2-3pm    What Kind of Leader Are You? SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Different people lead differently, and there are many ways to lead effectively. This workshop will help participants determine their own personal leadership style, as well as identify ways to integrate other styles into their own leadership. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Principles of Leadership, Disability Leadership, Organizational Leadership, and Leadership Enrichment certificates. Mon Sep 15, 2-3pm    A Lesson on Stereotypes CSIL, SUMC Rm 404 How do stereotypes impact our lives? In this interactive workshop we will examine the stereotypes we have, confront the common belief that we don't have stereotypes, and identify the effect they have on ourselves and others. Tue Sep 16, 5pm    Plan Your Work & Work Your Plan: Setting Effective Goals SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 "A goal without a plan is just a wish" --Antoine de Saint-Exupery. This workshop will focus not only on the importance of goals, but effective ways to set them so you have a plan for success. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Leadership Skills and Applications and Leadership Enrichment certificates. Wed Sep 17, 3-4pm    Understanding the Causes of Social Need SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Many people want to help communities in need, but few ask where the need came from. This workshop will take a look at what causes the need for community service to begin with. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Service Leadership and Leadership Enrichment certificates. This interactive workshop answers these questions and provides a context to examine the effect of power and privilege in our lives. Tue Sep 23, 5pm    Occupation Wellness SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 If you work full time, you spend about a third of your waking hours there! Come learn about achieving occupational wellness so that those hours are a pleasure and not a pain. Wed Sep 24, 5-6pm    Activism, Advocacy, and Social Movements SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Learn how social needs mobilze individuals and groups into action. Discuss social movements, and learn how to become a more effective activist and advocate. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Service Leadership and Leadership Enrichment certificates. This workshop looks at the dynamics of oppression and focuses specifically on how it is institutionalized. Tue Oct 07, 5pm    Environmental Wellness SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Leaders don't just take care of their own health, but also that of the world around them. This workshop will help you learn about the impact you have on the environment as well as ways to minimze that impact. Wed Oct 08, 5-6pm    Where Do I Fit In?: Understanding Identity SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Each of us has a unique identity, and sometimes that identity is not what others think of us. Learn how personal identity and social identity interact with each other. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS LGBTQ and Ally Leadership, Disability Leadership, Social Justice Leadership, and Leadership Enrichment certificates. This workshop will have participants take a look at how they fit into their world and how to more intentionally work to make that world a better place. Leaders make decisions all the time, and to be good leaders, they must make those decisions ethical. Come learn how ethics and integrity are essential for leaders. Mon Oct 13, 2-3pm    Current Issues in Social Justice: Media Matter CSIL, SUMC Rm 404 This workshop considers a current issue and how it relates to social justice. We will incorporate the Media that Matters Film Festivals to deepen our discussion and investigation of social justice, and answer the question: How does media impact what we perceive as justice? Tue Oct 14, 5pm    Say What You Mean: Communicating Effectively SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Effective leaders need to be effective communicators. Come gain some insight into the skills and behaviors that make a good communicator. Learn how using inclusive language can help bring people together rather than separating them. Wed Oct 15, 3-4pm    Vocation in Service Leadership SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 For some, service is something to do after work. For others, though, it is work. This workshop reflects on the responsibility we have to take action and explores ways to effectively stand up for social justice. Tue Oct 21, 5pm    Emotional Wellness SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Staying healthy doesn't just mean going to the gym. It also means taking care of yourself emotionally. Come learn some strategies to take care of your emotional self as well as how to support others in their quest for emotional wellness. Wed Oct 22, 5-6pm    Creating Social Change SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Creating social change can be very difficult, but very rewarding. Come learn some effective strategies on how to go about making change in your own world. Discover how people accept change, and leave feeling empoered to be a change agent. Thu Oct 23, 4-5pm Mon Nov 10, 2-3pm    Can't We All Just Get Along?: Managing Conflict SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Conflict happens…it is inevitable. So, rather than try to avoid it, come learn how to more effectively manage it. Learn your own conflict management style and how to deal with conflict in a group. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Principles of Leadership, Organizational Leadership, and Leadership Enrichment certificates. Mon Oct 27, 2-3pm    The Leadership Portfolio Explained SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 The leadership portfolio is an excellent way for you to showcase your leadership experiences and involvement throughout your college career. The portfolio can help you to distinguish yourself from your competition in interviews for jobs, internships, and graduate school. Come learn effective strategies for developing your own! This workshop is recommended for any student completing a Level II or Level III ATLAS certificate. Wed Nov 05, 12-1pm    Spiritual Wellness SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Leaders work with many different people with very different understandings of spirituality. This workshop will help participants develop a deeper understanding of what spirituality means to them as well as ways to transcend differences in the groups they lead. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Leadership and Wellness, Leadership and Life Skills, and Leadership Enrichment certificates. Wed Nov 05, 5-6pm    I Mean, Like, Um...Public Speaking Strategies SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Leaders often need to speak in public, which can be very difficult for many people. But, learning to use effective public speaking tools can help you connect with your audience and motivate them. This workshop will offer practical tools to use when standing at the podium. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Leadership Skills and Applications and Leadership Enrichment certificates. Wed Nov 12, 3-4pm    Disability 201 SUMC, CSIL Rm 404 Building upon the Disability 101 workshop, this session will engage participants in a discussion of the various models of disability, including the sociopoloitcal model, and universal design. Participants will be challenged to think to ways to utilize universal design concepts in their own leadership roles. This workshop counts towards the ATLAS Disability Leadership and Leadership Enrichment certificates. Thu Nov 20, 4-6pm

There are no applications to participate in this program and you can start the program at anytime. The commitment ranges from attending 1 workshop to completing several certificates over several semesters, depending on pace and which certificate(s) are completed. The cost is free for the Leadership Enrichment Certificate and $10 per certificate for Levels 2 and 3. All costs are associated with our certifications. You may attend any or all of our workshops for FREE!
