Expansion (1969)
back :: home :: next
As early as 1967 plans were being made to construct a major addition to the Student Union Building, but it was not until the summer of 1969 that work got underway.

Meeting the bulldozer is the grassed patio where so many student often gathered for recreation, or to listen to those who held forth at "Speaker’s Corner." In the background is the south wall of the original east wing, with the bas-relief emblems (left to right) of the Navy, Marines, and Air Force; that of the Army is out of the picture on the left. (these sculptures remained in place, though unidentified, in the new enclosed arcade. Sadly the Air Force wings vanished in 1983 behind a candy counter called "Fudge Plus.")

A wall starts to connect the former Women’s building to the east side of the Student union. Roofless guy is in the lower right corner.

All that remains of the Women’s Building are the walls that will be re-used in the Student Union’s expansion. The former light walled gymnasium (in the center of the is photo) will become the Gallagher Theater.
